Founded in 1965, UC Santa Cruz is a public university combining the intimacy of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university. The university enrolls about 15,000 students and offers more than 60 undergraduate majors and about 30 graduate degrees. UC Santa Cruz's campus is arranged in a cluster, with 10 colleges for undergraduates circling central facilities for the sciences, engineering, the student bookstore and commons, and administration.
